Most Romantic Place to Stay in Zermatt
Where is the most romantic place to stay in Zermatt? For us, there can only be 1 answer - the Swiss Alpine Hotel Allalin!
This adorable boutique hotel is where we stayed during our romantic getaway to Zermatt and is hands down one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in.
The entire hotel is decorated with beautifully carved wood, creating a cute alpine feel. Add to this a cosy fire in the evening, a lovely bar in the lobby and an exclusive guest-only Finnish sauna and relaxation room, and you can see why we think it’s the perfect romantic hotel in Zermatt.
Our favourite parts of Swiss Alpine Hotel Allalin:
Continental Buffet Breakfast
Boutique, Alpine vibes
Spa and Wellness Centre, including Finnish Sauna
The kindest staff we’ve ever met at a hotel!
Incredible Matterhorn Views from your Balcony
We honestly can’t speak highly enough of the Swiss Alpine Hotel Allalin. Even the location is perfect - less than 10-minute walk from Sunnegga, Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.
If you’re looking for the perfect place to stay in Zermatt for your romantic getaway, then the Swiss Alpine Hotel Allalin is where you should be looking!

Most Romantic Things to Do in Zermatt
Now you know the most romantic place to stay in Zermatt, you’ll need some inspiration of what to get up to during your couples getaway. Zermatt is one of the most romantic ski resorts in Europe, but despite this, we actually haven’t added skiing/snowboarding in Zermatt to this list.
We appreciate that not every couple (unlike us!) want to ski during a romantic getaway, but we wanted to mention it at the beginning anyway.
So, here’s our suggestions for the most romantic things to do in Zermatt.
Watch the Sunset over the Matterhorn
What is more romantic than a sunset? Well, we know one thing - a sunset over the most iconic mountain peak in the world, the Matterhorn!
We watched the sun setting over the Matterhorn on the final night of our epic 4-day winter Zermatt itinerary, and it was the perfect, romantic ending!
Understandably, there are many different viewpoints to see this spectacular natural wonder, each claiming to be better than the other.
For us though, we think these two are the best options when it comes to watching the sunset in Zermatt:
From the balcony of your boutique hotel room in Swiss Alpine Hotel Allalin while sipping on a complimentary Hot Alpine Tea
From the Famous Zermatt Matterhorn Viewpoint where you can watch the sun setting over the Matterhorn and the entire village of Zermatt
While these are our favourite sunsets in Zermatt, the reality is that anytime you get the chance to watch the sunset over the Matterhorn, it is going to be truly special!
Share a Delicious Swiss Cheese Fondue
Cheese fondue is more than simply melted cheese in a pot. It is a shared, intimate culinary experience perfect for a romantic meal in the mountains.
Zermatt is blessed with numerous Cheese Fondue options and realistically, all of them are going to be tasty and special.
If we had to choose, though, we’d recommend the Swiss Cheese Fondue at the Swiss Chalet Restaurant close to the Bahnhofstrasse in the centre of Zermatt town.
What sets this cheese fondue apart is the cosy, traditional, alpine feel that the restaurant gives - it really is like eating in a fairytale!
Sightseeing Helicopter Ride
Embarking on a sightseeing helicopter ride around the Alps and the iconic Matterhorn is a truly once-in-a-lifetime activity for you to enjoy in Zermatt.
As the helicopter soars around the majestic peaks, couples are treated to unparalleled panoramic views of the breathtaking alpine landscape.
The beauty of a sightseeing helicopter ride in Zermatt is that the adrenaline rush of flying over glaciers and mountain valleys is coupled with being able to share the experience together - creating an exceptionally romantic moment in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
Air Zermatt provides a variety of sightseeing helicopter rides, and they are guaranteed to be one of the best things to do as a couple in Zermatt.
Marvel at the Glacier Palace
One of the most unexpected magical moments we had in Zermatt was visiting the Glacier Palace at the top of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.
The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is actually Europe’s highest cable car station, and while this is impressive enough, it isn’t until you step inside the Glacier Palace that you realise just how magical this place really is.
The Glacier Palace sits directly inside the Glacier itself, meaning you’re free to walk about the chamber, gaze into deep crevasses and marvel at the most incredible ice sculptures.
This underground icy adventure is open all year round and can be accessed via the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise gondola. Bonus tip if you’re considering visiting the palace, buy your Matterhorn Glacier Paradise ticket online beforehand, which you can simply exchange for a lift ticket once you arrive to avoid the queues.
Stay a Night in an Igloo
Staying in an Igloo Hotel offers an unrivalled romantic experience in Zermatt and Iglu Dorf can provide exactly that!
The cosy and intimate setting of the igloo hotel rooms is set amidst the pristine snow-capped background of the Matterhorn.
Snuggling up together under warm fur blankets while admiring the breathtaking views of the Alps creates truly unforgettable memories for couples looking for a romantic stay in Zermatt.
This incredibly romantic escape in the heart of the Swiss Alps gets even better when you find out there is a private whirlpool for all guests to enjoy at Iglu Dorf.
In case it isn’t obvious, this romantic Zermatt experience is only possible in Winter (usually mid-December to early April), but it may be worth planning your Zermatt getaway around this most magical of experiences.
Relax in an Alpine Spa Together
Indulging in an alpine spa, complete with hot tubs and saunas, is the best way to spend a romantic moment together in Zermatt.
Surrounded by the serene beauty of the Swiss Alps, couples can unwind together in the warmth of a jacuzzi or bask in the heat of a steamy sauna.
Many hotels in Zermatt feature their own private spa and relaxation centres. For example, the Wellness Centre at the Swiss Alpine Hotel Allalin, where we stayed, features 4 different sauna rooms, including our favourite Finnish Sauna - yet another reason why we recommend staying here!
If your hotel doesn’t have its own spa though, we recommend either the Vita Borni Alpine Wellness Spa in the Zermatterhof Hotel, or the Day Spa Experience at the Mountain Ashram Spa in the Cervo Mountain Resort.
Whichever spa you choose to indulge in, releasing the tension in your muscles from a long day of skiing on the slopes is sure to be a wonderfully romantic experience in Zermatt.
Grab a Cocktail on a Sun Terrace overlooking the Matterhorn
Enjoying a cocktail on a sun terrace with panoramic views of the Matterhorn is the epitome of romance in Zermatt.
Again, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to panoramic Cocktail terraces in Zermatt, but our personal favourite is Adler Hitta. It’s the perfect place to recharge together after a busy day of skiing or hiking.
Walkable or skiable distance from the top of the underground Sunnegga Funicular, Adler Hitta features a wonderful sun terrace overlooking the Matterhorn and comfortable deck chairs to relax in and soak up the sun.
There is an extensive menu of drinks available, but Orla is a big advocate for their Hugo Spritz - she can’t get enough of them!
Whether its a relaxing drink after a spot of hiking or a pick-me-up beverage after a busy day skiing the slopes, gazing out over the Matterhorn on the terrace of Adler Hitta is going to be a romantic moment whatever the season in Zermatt, but we personally believe it is one of the best things to do in Zermatt during winter.
Picnic on Top of a Mountain
Delicious food with an astonishing view? What could get more romantic than that?
We have to admit, we’re suckers for a good picnic with a viewpoint, and in Zermatt the choices are endless.
Lake Leisee is a particularly popular spot during the summer, but you’ll still be able to find your own quiet area to have a moment with just the two of you. It’s a 15-minute walk from the Sunnegga Funicular Station and is a great place to recuperate and enjoy a picnic together.
To make the picnic even more romantic, we suggest stopping at the Lindt store in Zermatt Village, picking up some truffles, and pairing them with a bottle of champagne - you’re on holiday, treat yourself!
Take a Romantic Stroll around Zermatt Village
Sometimes, the most simple and free activities can be the most romantic. This is definitely the case when it comes to taking a stroll around Zermatt village.
The Hinterdorf area of the village, in particular, has the quintessential, traditional alpine feel to it. Some of the houses here date as far back as the 15th Century.
We couldn’t get enough of seeing all the cute mountain chalets with those traditional wooden shutters that are so synonymous with Switzerland. Yes, there are many incredible things to do in Zermatt, but we think one of the main reasons you should visit Zermatt is to simply walk around the village and enjoy this wonderful Alpine destination!
The main street in the village, Bahnhofstrasse, is perhaps most romantic during the evenings when the street lamps are lit and the moon is shining in the sky.
Zermatt has a really peaceful atmosphere, and you never notice this more than during a romantic stroll through the village together.
Hike to the Famous Riffelsee Lake in Summer
Hiking to the famous Riffelsee Lake during the summer in Zermatt is always recommended as one of the best things to do for couples in Zermatt. Although we haven’t personally got the chance to do it yet, it does look as though it would be a magical experience!
Most of you will have seen the photos - the famous shots where the Matterhorn is in the background, reflecting off the lake in the foreground.
The ‘hike’ to the lake is more of a walk really, just 10 minutes from the Rotenboden station on the Gornergrat Cog Railway.
Once you arrive, try to find your own slice of paradise and take in the extraordinary views together - it promises to be a special and romantic moment in Zermatt.
There we have it, folks, our round-up of the most romantic things to do in Zermatt. This adorable alpine village in the heart of the Swiss Alps is the epitome of romance and is certainly the most romantic destination we’ve ever visited. We hope this list has inspired you to create your own romantic itinerary for Zermatt, and fingers crossed you enjoy every special moment together!
